How this works

The calculator subtracts only the extra monthly costs you enter from the new job’s take-home pay. It then divides the resulting annual cash difference by the extra commute and unpaid-work time. It does not estimate taxes, benefits, overtime rules, childcare, health costs, retirement contributions, job security or promotion prospects.

A quick example

In the default example, 400 more monthly take-home pay minus 200 in extra monthly costs leaves 2,400 more per year. An extra 35 commute minutes on 5 workdays plus 2 unpaid hours weekly over 48 weeks is 236 hours, or about 10.17 per extra hour.
