Bulk Buying Calculator

Compare a bag with buying only the loose weight you need. See cash spent and cost per amount actually used.

Your numbers

Use one currency. Compare equivalent quality and edible weight. Loose produce can be bought in the exact weight entered, with no minimum charge. One bag must cover the planned use. Include only extra costs caused by each choice. Storage, nutrition and affordability are separate decisions. Follow food labels and local safety guidance; do not eat unsafe food to improve the result.

How it works

Loose cost equals price per kilogram times the required grams divided by 1,000, plus its extra cost. Bag cost is its price plus its extra cost. Both supply the same amount used. Cost per usable kilogram divides each total by that used weight. The break-even amount is (bag cost minus extra loose cost) divided by the loose price per kilogram. Above it, the bag costs less, provided one bag covers the need. A threshold above the bag weight cannot be reached with one bag; a negative threshold means the bag is already cheaper at any positive use.

Fictional prices: 500 g loose at 8 per kilogram costs 4. A 1 kg bag costs 6, even if only 500 g is used. At 750 g the totals tie. At 800 g the bag saves 0.40, but an extra trip costing 1 makes it cost 0.60 more.
