How do tax brackets work? A higher marginal rate does not automatically apply to every dollar in a progressive bracket system. Our cartoon cast explains marginal versus average tax rates using three clearly fictional income-tax layers.

Toy model: first $10,000 at 0%, next $10,000 at 10%, above $20,000 at 20%. Taxable income of $25,000 gives $2,000 modeled tax: an 8% average rate and a 20% marginal bracket rate. These are invented rates, not a country’s tax rules.

Not all countries use progressive income-tax brackets. The model excludes benefit withdrawal, allowance phase-outs, social contributions and other charges. Those can change real disposable-income outcomes. Check your tax authority’s current rules and seek qualified local help for your circumstances.
