Inflation explained with simple examples: purchasing power, disinflation, shrinkflation and real income. Learn why slower inflation does not mean prices are falling.

Alex has the same shopping list and somehow less shopping. His money is on a diet, and he is paying for the meal plan.

Join Alex, Maya, Leo, Nina and Ben, with Callum narration, for practical cartoon finance.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Understand inflation, disinflation and deflation; why household spending differs from an index; shrinkflation and unit prices; nominal versus real income; and practical responses that preserve emergency access.

CHAPTERS 00:00 Same money, less shopping 00:50 Slower inflation is still inflation 01:48 Causes and real purchasing power 02:49 Savings and practical responses 03:48 Debt, panic-buying and the basket

ILLUSTRATIVE MATH Invented dollar example: $100 × 1.05 = $105. Then $105 × 1.02 = $107.10. Slower positive inflation still raises the price level. If income rises 3% while relevant prices rise 5%, real purchasing power changes by 1.03 / 1.05 − 1 = approximately −1.9%. The subtraction shortcut, 3% − 5% = −2%, is an approximation. These are hypothetical figures, not current inflation data.
